Welcome to the School of Science and Technology

The school was formed following the merger between School of Science (SST) and Technology and School of Information Science and Knowledge management (SISKM) in February 2021, following the Universities’ higher education reforms and restructuring

The School of Science and Technology (SST) is a unique school proficient in teaching, research, and outreach. The school comprises three departments: Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Mathematics, Actuarial and Physical Sciences, and Department of Computing and Information Science and Knowledge management.

Since its inception, we have always endeavored to provide our students with an excellent foundation in line with the UoK vision, mission, and core values. We remain committed to quality teaching, creation, and applying knowledge through pure and applied research, disseminating new knowledge through scholarly publications in locally and internationally recognized forums. Furthermore, we equip graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that have enabled them to be competitive in the job market. In addition, our school has continued to contribute to knowledge generation through research. We also continue to host collaborators in research who periodically visit and give seminar talks on their research findings.

The graduates from SST have proven to be very competitive in the market and have so far received employment in lucrative workplaces. Examples include financial investments and allied companies, Risk management, Banks and Insurance industry, Financial and Regulatory Institutions, Environmental management and Conservation, Scientific research, Food industry, Biotechnology, Game reserves/conservancies, and research institutes/stations. The skills acquired to enable the graduates to be job seekers and be self-employed and job creators.

The school offers undergraduate programs in various disciplines of Actuarial Science, Applied Statistics with computing, Biochemistry, Information Technology, Computer Science, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, Microbiology, Mathematics and Information Science and Knowledge management. In addition, the school offers postgraduate programs, including Master of Science and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Pure Mathematics, and various disciplines in Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology.

BSc Chemical Engineering, BSc Analytical Chemistry, BSc Industrial Chemistry, BSc Physics, and Telecommunication and Master of Science and Ph.D. in Actuarial Science are being developed to meet market demand and soon reach CUE for accreditation the processes are complete.

The school has highly qualified and dedicated staff committed to research, teaching, and outreach. In addition, the school conducts short courses or training such as lab safety and management and computer packages.

The students undertake Industrial Attachment once in their academic cycle for practical learning. Field trips are also offered, and field courses as appropriate to enrich and complement theory and practice.

The school is actively taking part in the production of sanitizers and handwash for local use within the University and soon for sale by the University under the royal brand name ‘KABICHEM.’
